future of depp lomasy project. great to see you. john kerry, a big change from hillary clinton. not so much in policy, but in sort of direction, stature, coming from the senate more so than from the political world. he has come from a world of foreign policy. will the white house be running the show? >> the secretary of state is superbly well qualified. he spent nearly 29 years in the senate. always a member of the foreign relations committee. he has been a life-long student of foreign affairs after living with his parents in germany after the second world war. he is remarkably well connected to international leaders, and just knows these issues front wards and backwards. i think he is well prepared. you notice, andrea, that he called two sets of leaders over the weekend. many middle east leaders and also asian leaders. he is focused on those two regions. that's where he is going to be test veried early on. >> other secretaries of state have tried to engage much more verying russly, many of the, than hillary clinton did, in the northeast diploma as where i. she, of course, had the c

served under the president -- democratic administration of president clinton. now, if people here in the building say, look, you know, chuck hagel would be fine for us, including military uniformed service members because they understand, as you just pointed out, that the white house is going to be pulling the strings, turning the screws no matter who is the secretary of defenses. republican or democrat. i do want to set the record straight a little bit on this debate over the surge. now, senator hagel in the confirmation hearing said that 1,200 americans were killed during the 18-month surge operation. that's true. 1,200 americans died, but the actual number of combat deaths was 942. what's important to point out is that the 12 months before the surge began the total number of service members killed in iraq was 820. now, this is the most important figure i think if you are going to argue was the surge a success or not? that is the fact that the 12-month period following the surge operation there were 313 american deaths and the next year only 150. so that's why you hear a very st

hillary clinton and is msnbc diplomacy analyst. great to see you. you've spent so much time on this never ending mission of middle east peace. john kerry wants to tackle it, the president is going it tackle it early on. what is the cost benefit analysis for what can be accomplished now? >> i don't think the expectations are very high in terms of the president going out now and trying to produce something p i think what he's trying to do is send a signal that this is an issue that we care about, the secretary of state, john kerry, will be working on it. this is not going to be something that we ignore, but i think it's also going to be put into context. there are an enormous array of issues insyria, egypt. so i think his going to israel to seet see the pld and presided king ever jordan, it allows him to talk about although issues. >> how much does the past tension with netanyahu play here or is this netanyahu weakened by his own smaller than anticipated re-election margin? does he need president obama to a certain extent to validate himself as one willing to reach across the lines? >

he is confirmed? and final act, for now at least. it's hillary clinton's last day at the state department. >> so these last days have been bittersweet for me. but this opportunity that i have here before you gives me some time to reflect on the distance that weave traveled and to take stock of what we've done and what is left to do. >> and as she leaves the state department this afternoon, john kerry will arrive to be sworn in by justice alina keggen, and nor sentimental sendoff. 30 rock ends its seven-year run with lots of laughs and familiar faces. >> looked like another cold one in the midwest. >> bundle up, everyone. if you can, get hit by a car. >> according to the national weather service, you should, and i quote, leave work, get in your purpose bentley and be home with your sharks. >> if the democratic party controlled congress, i would see to it that he was punished in the worst way possible by having to come down here and listen to us. >> the show earned 14 emmys, had countless guest star appearances, some famous, and some not so famous. good day. i'm andrea mitchell.
